movie pavilion

TAKE OFF

MOVIE PAVILION FOR THE ANNUAL ZURICH MOVIE FESTIVAL: OCCASION OF THE 100 - YEARS COMMEMORATION OF FILM, SWITZERLAND, 1995.

the phenomenon of transcending into the world of movies is reflected in the construction and shape of the pavilion, it is meant to seduce the people passing by. the two materials of the pavilion relate to the duality of projection and the almost physical presence of movies during the show. the pavilion is virtually in movement and offers the spectator to take him on a journey into the land where dreams and visions become reality.

the massive part of the pavilion gives shape to the virtually moving part of the spectator's space, the frame for the screen and the back projection room. the translucent material - like fluid substance - complements the body to a whole. the entrance below the back projection room, the glazing of the back projection room and the exits are organized by the translucent part of the pavilion. in between the shows, all the exits along the side can be opened. thus the pavilion becomes an open space. during the show the inner space converts - by curtains - into a black box, while the pavilion keeps shining form the outside. the lights therefore are placed in the construction itself. the projection stream is wrapped - from the projector to the screen - in an opaque membrane. thus this technical secret of movie - projection - remains visible through the brightly enlightened back-projection room from outside, while its content - the projection stream - is mysteriously masked.
